With Funding from the British Academy, The Centre of Excellence for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health in partnership with University College London, will conduct formative research to develop a scalable intervention to improve early childhood nutrition and stimulation in rural Uganda, and assess its feasibility and acceptability through small scale pre-testing.

Project Duration: September 2017 to February 2019.

Project site: Iganga and Mayuge districts

Study aim: The overall goal of this project is to develop a scalable parenting intervention to improve early childhood nutrition, and development in the first 1000 days of life in rural Uganda.

Specifically, this project will:

Map existing nutrition and/or stimulation activities targeted at the first 1000 days, to minimize overlap and maximize complementarities
Engage with the new CHEW program and other stakeholders to understand current plans, gauge knowledge and interest in ECND, and explore how any ECND program might complement current activities
Explore current parental knowledge, attitudes and practices in relation to care, nutrition, and psychosocial stimulation of young children in Uganda and compare with the recommendations of the WHO Care for Development Package – to highlight priority areas for intervention not already addressed by current services
Design a scalable intervention package for rural Uganda in close partnership with the CHEWs programme and other key stakeholders
Explore the feasibility and acceptability of the intervention, through pre-testing
Outcomes
